Here is where things get a little bit trickier. What we need to do is browse to the folder which contains our icon. Now, our icon can be in one of a few forms. Icons can be stored as...
Now, not all .dll files contain icons. There is a file called Moricons.dll that is usually located in your Windows directory. This is a collection of general purpose icons.
Also, not all .exe files contain embedded icons. Some do, some don't. There really is no good way to tell other than through trial and error.
The only difference between selecting a .ico and a .dll is that with a .dll you are presented with a scrollable window containing the whole collection of icons. (see screen shot below)
If you pick the .ico (which we will do here) you are not presented with a selection window because you have only specified one icon. Let's move on.
Browse to the folder containing your .ico file. ? Then, click on your .ico file and select Open select .ico file
Here, a .dll icon collection is being selected instead. select .dll icon collection
If we chose a .dll icon collection, we will need to select one of the icons presented by clicking on it and selecting OK pick an icon

Now, our icon has been selected so we need to confirm the change by clicking on the OK button. Click OK to confirm change

Finally, we need to click OK one more time to make the change official. click OK to make it official

And now we can check to see how our new icon looks in the start menu! Check it out in the start menu
